Commemorating the battle which won Texas its independence, the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site features a walking path around the battlefield, where visitors have the chance to relive General Sam Houston's victory over the Mexican Army on April 21, 1836. Other attractions in the park include the San Jacinto Monument and Museum of History, which give a deeper look into the events of this decisive war, and the Battleship Texas, permanently moored at the park. Commissioned in 1914 and used as the D-Day flagship during World War II, the battleship is now a historical museum. The historic site and battleship are located on the shore of Burnett Bay about 17 miles east of downtown Houston, just north of Deer Park.
